4 New Floors added to 1894 Pre-war Building 🏢🍺

In March 2023, 650 1st Avenue was purchased for $33.5 million by Lalezarian Properties, which converted the structure into a residential building containing 111 apartments. They added 4 floors to this building on the Northeast corner of 37th & 1st Avenue. One of the copper-clad, bowed manscard-style domes as seen below was removed (breaking up the dome pair) to add the additional floors. You can still see the last remaining dome on the Northeast corner of 38th & 1st Avenue in the adjacent NYU Medical Center offices.

A beer brewery called Kips Bay Brewing Company used to exist at this location from 1894-1947, then it was repurposed into offices and are one of two groups of surviving brewery structures in Manhattan from the period when brewing was a major industry in the city before finally being converted into a residential building. Rivergate Veterinary Clinic is the only business which still exists in the building. The entrance for the clinic at 648 1st Avenue was sealed up by brick, so most likely customers use the main residential entrance now.

The Tutor City Confidential blog provides more amazing history about the Kips Bay Brewery, also known as Kips Bay Brewing and Malting Co. and Patrick Skelly Brewery.
