From the Esplanade to Park Avenue: Murray Hill’s Fourth of July Weekend

This Fourth of July weekend, Murray Hill offered neighbors two unique opportunities to connect with America’s 250th anniversary, both by looking back at our nation’s history and by experiencing it together as a community.

On Friday afternoon, neighbors gathered along the East River Esplanade in Murray Hill to watch the Sail4th 250 Parade of Class B Tall Ships sail south along the East River. The international fleet began its journey at Hell Gate Bridge, and then sailed past Murray Hill. Among the vessels was the French Navy’s Ã‰cole Navale, an especially fitting participant while remembering the alliance between France and the United States during the American Revolution. With sails raised against the skyline, the historic training and sailing vessels offered a rare opportunity to see these beautiful ships up close before the larger Parade of Sail was held on July 4. The Esplanade quickly became one of the neighborhood’s best viewing spots as residents, visitors, photographers, and families gathered to enjoy the procession.

Just a few blocks inland, the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association’s Preservation & Design Committee commemorated the holiday in a different way. The committee decorated the Mary Murray DAR plaque with a patriotic wreath and display panels, inviting neighbors to pause and remember the remarkable story of Mary Murray, whose legendary hospitality during the Revolutionary War is said to have delayed British officers just long enough to help General Washington’s retreat following the Battle of Kips Bay. The simple tribute served as a reminder that Murray Hill’s own history is woven into the story of America’s founding.

From the East River waterfront to one of our neighborhood’s most historic landmarks, the weekend offered meaningful opportunities to reflect on America’s 250th anniversary while celebrating the places, stories, and shared experiences that continue to make Murray Hill such a special community.
