Coast Guard Breaks Up Icy Rivers 🧊⛴️
On January 27th at 2pm all NYC ferry service was suspended due to thick ice in the East River and Hudson River. Multiple U.S. Coast Guard tug boats broke up ice in the Rivers and NY Harbor, so that ships and boats could navigate safely. If the frigid temperatures stay until the 1st weekend of February as forecasted it will be the longest deep freeze on record in 65 years. 🥶
“During the severe winter of 1917–1918, the Hudson River froze so deeply (up to 18 inches thick) that a 3-mile-long ‘ice bridge’ formed between Nyack and Tarrytown. This solid sheet lasted for 43 days, serving as a dangerous, officially recognized, and used route for pedestrians, horse-drawn sleighs, and automobiles.”
