COMMUNITY ALERT! Rash of Flower Theft in Murray Hill

By: Elaine Silber, MHNA Trustee

Murray Hill is particularly lovely in the spring and summer with trees in full bloom and beautiful flowers and plants decorating the tree-beds and planter boxes. Unfortunately, much to the distress of those who beautify their streetscape, thieves also find these plants and flowers very appealing. Within the last 2 weeks there has been a rash of thefts of select plants and flowers. In spite of signs, tree guards, and in some cases clear evidence of camera surveillance, thieves are not deterred.

To deter thieves (and dogs) you can invest in garden wire or opt for a higher wired and sturdy fence that should be tucked inside the iron rail and go all around the perimeter. Another solution would be to simply put mulch or some kind of plant cover in the tree-beds instead of begonias, impatiens and coleus, but how dull our blocks would be!

Please report any thefts to your Neighborhood Policing Officers for your precinct and sector. The Neighborhood Policing Officers for the 17th Precinct Sector A are shown below. Try to give as much detail as you can, including dates and approximate times and address of the theft. If you can, also report the theft to 311.
