DOROT Brings Connection and Support to Older Adults in Murray Hill

DOROT has been bringing generations together in New York City for nearly 50 years, helping older adults stay connected to their communities. While DOROT’s Manhattan headquarters is on the Upper West Side, many of its programs are available right here in Murray Hill, at home or over the phone.

MHNA has been working with DOROT to make these opportunities more accessible to our neighborhood, both for older adults and for Murray Hill residents looking to volunteer.

Looking for a little more connection? Try Friendly Visiting

DOROT’s Friendly Visiting program matches older adults with volunteers for regular visits at home. Matches are made based on interests, hobbies and personalities, and visits can include talking, sharing interests, playing a game, taking a walk or simply enjoying each other’s company.

Friendly Visiting is available on Manhattan’s East Side from 14th to 96th Streets, including Murray Hill. To get started, a DOROT social worker will arrange a home assessment to meet you, learn more about you and determine which programs may be a good fit.

Holiday packages come with something even better: a visit

DOROT’s Package Delivery program brings older adults and volunteers together throughout the year for seasonal deliveries.

Volunteers deliver a care package and spend some time visiting with the recipient or connect by phone afterward. Older adults who have completed DOROT’s home assessment are contacted before upcoming deliveries to see if they would like to participate.

If you’re not yet connected with DOROT, you can reach out now to begin the process. A home assessment may take a few weeks to schedule, but getting started now could prepare you for a future delivery, including Thanksgiving Package Delivery on Sunday, November 22.

Other ways to connect from home

DOROT’s Caring Calls program matches older adults and volunteers for weekly friendly phone conversations. DOROT also offers in-home Tech Coaching, occasional visits and help with certain errands or projects, as well as online and telephone programs.

Bringing DOROT and Murray Hill together

Murray Hill residents have already begun volunteering with DOROT, and this September a group of MHNA volunteers will participate in DOROT’s Rosh Hashanah Package Delivery, delivering packages and visiting with older adults.

We hope to continue building this connection so more Murray Hill residents know DOROT not only as a place to volunteer, but also as a resource for older adults right here in our neighborhood.
