In Memoriam: Hilary Black, A Devoted Neighbor, Volunteer, and Friend
The Murray Hill community mourns the loss of Hilary Black, a longtime neighbor and cherished member of the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association, who passed away after a sudden illness. Her passing comes as a deep shock and profound loss to all who knew her.
Born in New York City, Hilary earned an MBA from Columbia University and lived for decades in Murray Hill, directly across the street from The Morgan Library. She worked as an office manager for an independently owned business in Midtown South, and was known among friends and neighbors for her warmth, generosity, and creativity — especially her holiday baked goods, lovingly labeled “from Hilary’s kitchen.”
Hilary was deeply committed to the Murray Hill community. Since the earliest days of the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association, she volunteered tirelessly — serving as a trustee, Executive Board member, and passionate advocate. Whether designing printed materials like brochures and newsletters, or standing on the street handing out flyers to encourage membership, she was always ready to lend a hand. Her last project was the beautiful design of the MHNA’s 60th Anniversary of the New York City Landmarks Law: Celebrating Murray Hill’s Fourteen Landmark Buildings and Two Historic Districts brochure.
What distinguished Hilary most was her quiet strength and spirit. She brought integrity, intelligence, and grace to everything she did. She never sought the spotlight, yet her presence was always felt — thoughtful, reliable, and always willing to go above and beyond. Friends and colleagues remember her modesty, her attention to detail, and her sense of duty. If Hilary committed to something, she followed through with care and professionalism.
Hilary Black was more than a neighbor — she was a cornerstone of the community, a reminder of what it means to give back, to lead with kindness, and to make the world a better place in small and lasting ways.
She will be deeply missed and long remembered.
