In Memoriam: Stephen A. Weingrad
The Murray Hill community is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Stephen A. Weingrad in September 2025. A longtime resident and two-term President of the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association, Steve devoted more than six decades to the neighborhood he loved.
Steve lived on East 35th Street since 1962 and practiced law in the Empire State Building, where he founded Weingrad & Weingrad with his father. He and his wife, Rosemary (Romi-deceased), were married for 40 years. Known for his intellect, warmth, and quiet humor, Steve also enjoyed collecting and “dabbling” in art, transforming his office into a showcase for local talent.
As MHNA’s president twice, Steve brought steady leadership, deep civic knowledge, and remarkable patience. He believed in listening, collaborating, and tackling the “constant battle” of preserving Murray Hill’s character. He also volunteered for many years on Community Board 6, working on planning, preservation, and neighborhood quality-of-life issues.
Steve’s wisdom, kindness, and dedication leave a lasting legacy. He will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors.
