A Year of Little Neighborhood Helpers: How Wee Ones Club Students Helped Care for Murray Hill
In May, the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association celebrated the completion of the inaugural year of our Adopt-A-Block School Outreach Program with the Preschool 4’s class at Wee Ones Club.
Throughout the school year, students learned about caring for their neighborhood through lessons on community helpers, recycling, tree beds, the changing seasons, helping the community through art, and keeping shared spaces clean and beautiful.
This spring, the children proudly put their lessons into action by planting flowers on their adopted block. They also created signs sharing about the flowers they planted, encouraging neighbors to care for their own blocks and helping to spread pride in the community they call home.

For our final visit, we shared a simple but powerful message: if you think something good is needed, you can help create it.
The children learned how small acts of kindness and connection can grow into something much bigger, and that they don’t have to wait until they are grown up to make a difference. Every neighborhood is shaped by people who care enough to help, whether that means planting flowers, welcoming a neighbor, picking up litter, or bringing people together.

To celebrate completing the program, each student received an Official Neighborhood Helper certificate along with a special Kids Corner pin from Park Avenue Day. The pin served as a reminder that many of the things we enjoy in our neighborhood began as simple ideas. In this case, the idea was to create a place where children and families could come together, have fun, and feel connected to their community.
The goal of Adopt-A-Block was never simply to teach children about flowers or litter. It was to help them understand that they are already part of their neighborhood and that even at four years old, their actions matter.
Initiatives like this are at the heart of what the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association is all about. Building a stronger neighborhood starts with helping people feel connected to the place they live and to one another. We hope these lessons stay with these students for years to come.
Thank you to the students, teachers, and staff at Wee Ones Club for partnering with us during this inaugural year. We are incredibly proud of these little neighborhood helpers and can’t wait to see all the ways they continue to do good in the hood. 💚
