New Banners Celebrate Murray Hill’s Place in American History

MHNA’s Preservation & Design Committee developed a new series of street banners celebrating Murray Hill’s history and America’s 250th anniversary. This weekend, committee members oversaw the removal of the old banners and the installation of the new designs throughout the neighborhood.

The banners combine Murray Hill’s Revolutionary War history with images celebrating America’s founding. Designs feature Mary Murray welcoming British General William Howe, George Washington on horseback, the Murray family home, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and historic maps of Manhattan and the East River.

Look for the new banners throughout Murray Hill, and use the map below to find their locations. Each banner offers a glimpse into our neighborhood’s history and the larger story of America’s founding.

How proud to be a Murray Hillian. These banners beautifully celebrate Murray Hill’s unique role in our nation’s founding while honoring America’s 250th anniversary. They add beauty to our streets, they educate us, strengthen our neighborhood’s identity, and remind us that Murray Hill holds a special place in American history. Congratulations to the Preservation & Design Committee (committee within the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association) showcasing with talent how preserving and displaying our heritage enriches the community and inspires pride for generations to come. BRAVO!
