NYPD 17th Precinct’s 2025 “State of Command” – Community Update

At the January 27, 2026 Community Council meeting, the NYPD 17th Precinct shared its annual State of Command update, highlighting staffing, crime trends, enforcement activity, traffic safety, and community engagement across Murray Hill, Midtown East, Kips Bay, Turtle Bay, Sutton Place, and Tudor City.

Overall crime in the precinct declined year-over-year, with total major index crimes down 6.2% (from 904 in 2024 to 856 in 2025), continuing a long-term 82.7% reduction over the past 32 years. Notably, homicides dropped to zero, robberies declined 23.4%, felony assaults fell 19%, burglaries decreased slightly, and grand larceny fell 3.1%. The only major category showing an increase was grand larceny auto, up 12%, though still down nearly 96% compared to historical levels. Youth crime also decreased by 5.4%.

The precinct reported increased enforcement and summons activity, with total summonses up 35%, driven by a significant rise in moving, parking, criminal, and quality-of-life violations—particularly related to bikes, scooters, and mopeds. While confiscations dropped sharply, moving violations and criminal summonses for micromobility offenses rose substantially, reflecting a shift toward compliance and accountability.

Traffic safety showed mixed results: collisions declined 10.4%, and pedestrian and cyclist injuries fell by 13% and 15.9% respectively, though traffic fatalities increased from one to two incidents. The precinct also identified key intersections with higher collision volumes to guide future enforcement and safety efforts.

Beyond enforcement, the 17th Precinct highlighted its extensive community engagement, including managing hundreds of planned demonstrations and protests, supporting local events, and maintaining active partnerships with residents, businesses, schools, and civic organizations. The presentation emphasized collaboration, transparency, and shared responsibility in keeping the neighborhood safe and livable.
