Remembering Mary Lindley Murray This Independence Day

Location: Park Avenue Mall at East 37th Street

As we celebrate Independence Day and the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, we invite you to visit the DAR Plaque on Park Avenue Mall at 37th Street honoring Mary Lindley Murray.

Mary Murray played a notable role during the Revolutionary War. Following the British landing at Kips Bay on September 15, 1776, she reportedly entertained General William Howe and his officers at her home, delaying their advance and providing valuable time for General George Washington’s troops to withdraw.

Beginning Thursday, July 2, a commemorative wreath will be displayed at the plaque, along with two weatherproof historical panels that explore Mary Murray’s story and the significance of the Battle of Kips Bay. The display will remain in place throughout the Independence Day holiday.

If you’re in the neighborhood, we hope you’ll stop by to reflect on the remarkable woman whose quick thinking became part of New York City’s Revolutionary War history. The Knickerbocker Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution DAR placed this bronze plaque in 1903 commemorating Mary Murray’s role in the Revolutionary War.
