Rossini’s Restaurant – A Taste of Northern Italy in Murray Hill
The Rossini Family shares the story about their restaurant which has been in Murray Hill for 46 years.
Rossini’s Restaurant opened its doors at 108 East 38th Street on February 8, 1978, and over the past 46 years has become an integral part of the Manhattan dining scene. Rossini’s is the product of over 50 years of restaurant experience, relying heavily on the entrepreneurship of Romano Bernaz. Arriving in New York City in 1948 from Trieste, Italy, Romano opened his first restaurant in 1953 after serving his apprenticeship in several fine Italian restaurants of the time. His use of the freshest ingredients together with his culinary acumen has resulted in a menu and presentation that has become the favorite of many New York City diners.
Rossini’s is currently owned and operated by Romano’s two sons, Gerry and Ray Bernaz, along with his nephew, Josip Cernjul. Joined with them is the irreplaceable support of both Nancy, the Manager, and of course, Maryann, Murray Hill’s favorite bartender who is Gerry and Ray’s sister. Rossini’s dedicated employees keep the tradition alive, from the chefs to the servers who have been working for over a decade or two and some even three.
Rossini’s success and longevity are due to the family’s constant presence and their philosophy of serving true Italian cuisine in an evolving and interesting fashion. Music has always been a high point of any Rossini’s experience, especially Saturday night the trio who sing selections from Broadway shows and popular operatic arias. They also have a talented piano player on Friday and Sunday evenings.
Gerry, Ray, and Josip continue with the traditions while also seeking new and innovative approaches to their cuisine while remaining within the repertoire of the Northern Italian kitchen. The result has produced a loyal and satisfied customer base that enjoys coming to “Our Little Area of Murray Hill” for the past 46 years.
The old-world charm of Rossini’s would make you feel like you just stepped out of the movies while the decor leaves that feeling of nostalgia. Go there and experience it for yourself!
