St. Vartan Cathedral to Begin Major Transformation in September 2026
The Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America announced that St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral will begin Phase 2 of its transformation in September 2026, with a projected full reopening in Spring 2028.
Phase 1, completed in 2025, restored the cathedral’s iconic dome with new gold leaf, renewing its luminous presence on the New York City skyline. A newly fabricated summit cross and custom lighting system now illuminate the dome, cross, and façades at night.
Phase 2, led by Beyer Blinder Belle, will include a full interior restoration, upgraded building systems, and enhancements to event and gathering spaces. A major highlight will be the installation of a new pipe organ by C. B. Fisk, expected to be among the largest in New York City and to establish the cathedral as a regional destination for music.
The 2nd Avenue lobby will also undergo a complete redesign, introducing a striking new arrival experience with a more sophisticated aesthetic.
In support of this transformation, 630SECOND banquet facilities will pause operations and are expected to reopen at the end of 2027. During this time, a new Boardroom space will be available, accommodating up to 40 guests for seated receptions, 60 guests for cocktail receptions, and up to 80 guests for theater-style seating. A new pantry will also be added adjacent to the Boardroom to enhance convenience and service for guests.
What Neighbors Can Expect
Construction activity will be visible in and around the cathedral site throughout the renovation period. Work will take place primarily during standard weekday hours in accordance with New York City regulations, with efforts to limit noise, control dust, and maintain safe pedestrian access.
The Diocese is committed to minimizing disruption to the surrounding Murray Hill neighborhood, with clear signage and safety measures maintained throughout the project.
Upon completion, the renewed St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral will offer enhanced facilities for worship, music, education, and public events. The addition of the new pipe organ will further expand opportunities for concerts and cultural programming, strengthening the cathedral’s role as a destination for both New Yorkers and visitors.
Regular updates on the transformation and reopening will be shared in the months ahead.
