Less Than Two Weeks To Go: Step Into Murray Hill’s Revolutionary Past
There’s still time to reserve your tickets. On Saturday, September 26, neighbors and history enthusiasts are invited to discover the answer during a special Historic Walking Tour & Tea Party commemorating America’s 250th Anniversary and the events surrounding the Battle of Kips Bay and the British invasion of New York City.
The Battle of Kips Bay took place on September 15, 1776, when British forces landed on Manhattan’s eastern shore and began an invasion that would ultimately lead to New York City remaining under British occupation for nearly seven years. The events of that day changed the course of the Revolution.
Participants will journey through Murray Hill and learn how the battle unfolded, what life was like during the British occupation, and how the Murray family became forever linked to one of the neighborhood’s most enduring legends while helping give Murray Hill its name.
Following the tour, attendees will enjoy a Colonial Tea Reception and have the opportunity to meet historical figures brought to life through engaging character portrayals.
Guests will also receive a commemorative booklet detailing the British invasion of New York and the historic events that unfolded in and around Murray Hill.
Three guided tours will depart at staggered times beginning at 11:15 a.m. Whether you’re a new or longtime Murray Hill resident, or simply fascinated by the stories hidden within New York’s streets, this is a rare opportunity to explore the neighborhood through the lens of one of the most consequential periods in American history. Discover why Murray Hill bears its name, what happened at Kips Bay, and how a simple cup of tea became part of one of the neighborhood’s most enduring Revolutionary War legends, all while walking the same ground where history unfolded 250 years ago.
