UN General Assembly traffic alerts!

The following streets will be closed for the UN General Assembly from Tuesday, September 12th, – Saturday, September 30th, 2023, at the discretion of the NYPD in Manhattan.

Area bounded by 60th Street on the North, 34th Street on the South, 1st Avenue on the East and 3rd Avenue on the West; All inclusive
5th Avenue between East 55th Street and East 50th Street
Madison Avenue between East 42nd Street and East 58th Street
Park Avenue between East 62nd Street and East 45th Street
Vanderbilt Avenue between 42nd Street and 47th Street
Lexington Avenue between East 57th Street and East 42nd Street
FDR Drive Service Road between 48th Street and 49th Street
East 49th Street between 1st Avenue and FDR Drive Service Road
East 48th Street between 1st Avenue and FDR Drive Service Road
East 47th Street between 3rd Avenue and Park Avenue
42nd Street between 7th Avenue and FDR Drive
45th Street between Madison Avenue and 1st Avenue
34th Street between 7th Avenue and FDR Drive

STREET CLOSURES

Sunday afternoon, September 17, through Saturday, September 23

Upper level of 1st Avenue from 42nd Street to 48th Street (vehicular and bicycle traffic will travel through the 1st Avenue tunnel)

Side streets from 42nd Street to 47th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues

Additional street closures are possible from 34th Street to 59th Street, from river to river. Please pay careful attention to signs posted on each block.

While you may not see activity on every block, any block may be needed as an alternate route on a moment’s notice.

There are other side events that could also cause a block to be closed.

* Some world leaders may arrive as early as Friday night, 9/15, prompting street closures on certain blocks in and around hotels and missions.

PEDESTRIAN CHECKPOINTS (approx. 7am to 9pm)

2nd Avenue: 42nd, 44th, 45th, and 46th Streets

1st Avenue: 42nd, 46th, and 49th Streets

FROZEN ZONES—Presidential Visit

Frozen Zones will occur at times, stopping all vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic. These freezes could last anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes in any given location. These disruptions are expected to occur late Sunday through Wednesday.

BICYCLES

Bike lanes will be maintained along 1st and 2nd Avenues.

A special lane will travel through the tunnel on 1st Avenue.

Citi Bike stations will be closed in the Secure Zone from 42nd Street to 47th Street, between 1st and 2nd Avenues.

OUTDOOR DINING RESTRICTIONS

Outdoor dining will be closed along 2nd Avenue from 42nd Street to 57th Street, as well as on select side streets between 1st and 2nd Avenues.

SANITATION COLLECTION (see also the attached flyer)

Sanitation collection will occur overnight. Residents and businesses from 42nd Street to 47th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues should put their garbage on the curb after 9:00 p.m. Residents may hear some extra noise overnight.

MTA

Bus service will be operational but subject to extensive delays on all routes traveling through Midtown. Subway service will not be affected. We recommend traveling by subway to avoid the disruptions aboveground. (Note: Presidential travel may temporarily limit access to some entrances of the 51st Street 6 Station and the Lexington Avenue–53 Street E/F Station).

Northbound M15/M15-SBS service will travel via the 1st Avenue tunnel and will bypass the stops near the UN.

M34-SBS, M34A-SBS, M42, M50, M57, and M31 crosstown service will experience disruptions on the East Side.

FERRY

Ferry service in portions of the East River will be subject to various delays and suspensions during the UN General Assembly. Your carrier will provide additional details.

NYC Ferry and NY Waterway bus service will be detoured.

DELIVERIES

No deliveries from 42nd Street to 47th Street, between 1st and 2 Avenues. Food deliveries can be made along 2nd Avenue. For any larger deliveries, such as furniture, you’ll need to call the 17th Precinct community line at (212) 826-3224.
