THE ISSUE
The Midtown South Mixed Use Plan (MSMX) with the 34th Street Busway was approved by the City Council. Mayor Adams has paused final approval until September 14 to get more community input.

WHAT IS THE BUSWAY?
34th Street, from 9th to 3rd Avenue, will be buses-only. Delivery trucks may be allowed, but cars diverted from 34th will overwhelm nearby residential streets. This threatens pedestrian safety and increases congestion, noise and pollution in our tree-lined Historic Residential neighborhood.

WHY IT MATTERS
The MSMX plan will add housing, parks, and industry improvements citywide, but the busway isn’t required for these benefits. It risks adding to the heavily congested traffic and will add to a more pollution-filled environment and cause a pedestrian safety hazard

COMMUNITY CONCERNS
The plan passed without appropriate traffic data, public notice or community input. Transportation Alternatives, a national advocacy group, influenced the CB6 Transportation Committee despite limited local representation. One of their leaders even said: “We have to get the 34th Street busway or we’ll never get the 42nd busway approved.”

FUTURE IMPACT
Traffic diverted from 34th Street—and potentially from 42nd Street in the future—will spill into residential blocks east and west of the Midtown Tunnel, worsening congestion and safety risks to our community.

TA 34th St busway is a BAD IDEA. It’s unnecessary and a boondoggle. I live on E. 35 St. between Park and Madison and our block is down to ONE LANE for the next 2 years at least because of a huge block-wide construction project. Adding frustrated westbound traffic would only add to the honking!! And I take the westbound bus often and get across town within 10 minutes! There is no need for a busway here and its construction would only add pain.
