What the MTA’s Own Data Reveals About the 14th Street Busway

A preliminary review of the MTA’s own data shows that average bus speeds on 34th Street are nearly identical to those on the 14th Street Busway. See the chart above: since Congestion Pricing began in January, the M34 and M14A operate at the exact same average speed, and overall, 14th Street buses are only 0.38 mph faster. Why aren’t the DOT and elected officials sharing this full picture? Rather than pushing a plan that helps neither bus riders nor local residents, the City should be adding more buses, and looking to the Fifth Avenue redesign (www.futureoffifth.com)—an approach that aims to elevate and revitalize, not simply reroute traffic. And one more spoiler: the M42 and M57 buses are actually slower than both 14th and 34th Streets, averaging just 5.34 and 5.22 mph!
